MTN Ghana CEO, Ebenezer Asante, is Overall ‘CEO of the Year’

Mr. Ebenezer Twum Asante has been named overall ‘CEO of the Year’ at the recently held AfricaCom Awards. This comes a few weeks after Mr. Asante was named Best CEO within the MTN Group.

The AfricaCom award is in recognition of the consistent growth of MTN Ghana under his visionary leadership. It said, Mr. Asante has overseen the healthy performance of MTN Ghana, consistently growing market share even in the face of a market largely described as saturated. MTN Ghana subscriber base saw a three percent growth to over 18 million, shooting its total market share to almost 50 per cent, and mobile data market share to over 60 per cent.

Also, Mr. Eben Asante led MTN Ghana to acquire 4G LTE spectrum late last year at a whopping US$67.5million and invested an additional US$18million for initial deployment within six months, making MTN the first Telco to start 4G LTE services in Ghana.
Mr. Themba Zotwane, Senior Manager, Operations, in the WECA Region received the award on behalf of Mr. Asante.
Commenting on the award, Mr. Asante attributed this award to the commitment shown by the strong leadership team and the dedicated staff of MTN Ghana.

“It's a blend of hard work, dedication and the commitment to delight our customers that drives us to excel in our work" he said. “The award demonstrates our vision and strategy to offer value to our customers.”

He added that this award is a recognition of the consistent growth the company has witnessed over the years. He dedicated the award to all MTN staff and customers.

 Mr. Asante promised that he will continue to provide service-based leadership that should convince our customers that the future can only be great.

MTN MOBILE MONEY SUBSCRIBERS RECEIVE Q3 INTEREST PAYMENT

MTN, Ghana’s leading mobile telecommunications company, has made payments of over GH₵ 8.85 million in interest to about 5.8 million Mobile Money customers. 

The payment, which was made on November 20, 2016 was done in collaboration with the 16 partner banks of MTN Mobile Money.

Following the issuance of the E-Money Issuers Guidelines, the Bank of Ghana approved the payment of interests to Mobile Money subscribers in September 2016. MTN paid a total of 13.4 million Cedis as interests to subscribers for the first and second quarters of 2016.  This payment therefore brings the total to over 22 million Ghana Cedis.

Commenting on the 3rd quarter interest payment, the General Manager for MTN Mobile Financial Services, Eli Hini said, “MTN is committed to making Mobile Money more beneficial to subscribers beyond the convenience it provides and this payment points to that fact.

Mr. Hini urged all Mobile Money subscribers to cultivate the habit of keeping money in their wallets at all times to enable them undertake numerous transactions on the go.

MTN Mobile Money has close to nine million subscribers with over 55,000 merchant points across the country.

MTN, Tigo Leads in Mobile Data Subscription Gains in Ghana

MTN and Tigo Ghana have recorded a positive net mobile data subscription during the second quarter of 2016. The two leading network operators had their data subscriptions increased by a net 303,002 and 8,612 on a quarter-on-quarter basis and 1,241,277 and 143,146 year-on year respectively.

According to a recent official report released by the National Communications Authority (NCA), whereas MTN and Tigo made an impressive gain, strong competitors including Vodafone, Airtel, Glo and Expresso on the other hand experienced net subscriber losses.

The report mentioned Airtel as the network that experienced the highest loss in quarter-on-quarter net subscription (119,075) followed by Vodafone (118,486) and Glo (27,365) with Expresso also recording net loss of 2,595.

It noted that at the end of the second quarter of 2016, MTN had 50.0% market share with total mobile data subscription of 9,369,407 followed by Vodafone with 3,271,790(17.4%), with Airtel occupying the third spot with 3,058,545 (16.3%). Tigo is the fourth largest operator in terms of mobile data subscription with customer base of 2,716,023 (14.5%), Glo ended the quarter with 298,622 mobile data subscriber (1.6%) and Expresso had the least subscription of 41,541 (0.2%) at the end of the second quarter of 2016 (Table 7).

Mobile data traffic
According to the regulator mobile data usage has been increasing steadily in Ghana since the third quarter of 2015, consistent with the increase in mobile data subscription. It noted that total volume of mobile data usage expanded by 19.5% during the second quarter of 2016, increasing from 12.8 million gigabytes (GB) to 15.3 million gigabytes. The year-on-year data consumption more than doubled (100.9%), growing from 7.6 million gigabytes in the second quarter of 2015 to 15.3 million gigabytes at the end of June 2016.

Mobile data usage per operator
Performance of telcos during the second quarter of 2016 witnessed MTN accounting for 41.4% of the total data usage in Ghana with 6.33 million gigabytes of data followed by Vodafone with 3.99 million gigabytes (26.1%) data usage. Airtel was the third largest player, with a market share of 23.1% and data volume of 3.53 million gigabytes. Tigo and Glo accounted for 8.8% and 0.6% of total volume of data consumption respectively, with data volumes of 1.31 million gigabytes and 89 thousand gigabytes.

Facebook to Increase UK Employees By 50% in 2017

Facebook will expand its presence in the UK by 50% when it opens its new London headquarters in 2017, the US technology giant has announced. It will hire 500 additional employees, including engineers, marketers, project managers and sales staff.

"The UK remains one of the best places to be a tech company," said its London-based executive, Nicola Mendelsohn.

Facebook's new headquarters will be in Fitzrovia at a site that is currently undergoing redevelopment. The majority of the new staff will be based there. Ms. Mendelsohn will announce the expansion at the Confederation of British Industry conference later.

'High-skilled jobs'
"Many of those new roles will be high-skilled engineering jobs as the UK is home to our largest engineering base outside of the US," said Ms. Mendelsohn, who is vice-president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Facebook.

The company said some of its most important innovations had been developed in the UK, including Aquila, a solar-powered, unmanned plane that provides internet connectivity to remote regions.

That project is located at Facebook's only UK site outside London, in Somerset.

Engineers at Facebook's London office are continuing the development of Workplace, a platform devised to improve communications between workers within a business, launched last month.

There has been speculation following the UK referendum vote to leave the EU that international companies may reconsider investing in the UK.
However, Facebook's announcement comes just a week after Google announced a £1bn investment in a new London headquarters and the creation of 3,000 new jobs by 2020.

London's mayor, Sadiq Khan welcomed the Facebook news. "Facebook's decision to expand in London is further evidence that London's strength as a tech hub keeps on growing," he said. "The capital's vibrant tech scene is the envy of Europe and Facebook's continuing commitment is another sign that London is open to talent, innovation and entrepreneurship from all four corners of the world."
